Matthew 6:14-15 (KJV)
14  For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15  But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

To forgive is one of the greatest qualities of character in the believer. Sometimes it is easier to hold a grudge than to seek restoration in a relationship. We justify, and share our grievance with anybody who will listen. Gaining allies or choosing sides of people who you tell only your side. You embellish because as you tell it, it doesn’t sound as bad as you say it out loud. Now it’s even more difficult to fix because you have cheerleaders to advocate for you. It spins out of control. Because of this relationships crumble, marriages fall apart and churches split. Sometimes we choose the silliest hills on which to die! “Agree with thine advisory quickly” (Mat. 5:25). Time does not heal all wounds.

Allowing ourselves to be forgiven is often difficult. I have dealt more than once with people who believe that they can’t be forgiven because of the deeds of the past. Most of us who won’t be forgiven, or won’t forgive ourselves, have difficulty forgiving. Let us come to learn the love and grace of God, who through the blood, forgives all sin. Be forgiven!

Now for the crowd:  Assuming a grievance of someone who has been sinned against puts you in a bad place. You can be a peace maker only if you have not chosen sides. Other than that you magnify the problem. You have not been sinned against. You cannot forgive for it is not yours to forgive. One of the most difficult things to do is to keep your nose in your own back yard. Encourage, on the other hand, to forgive and restore.

Being forgiven teaches us to forgive. Sometimes this comes as a hard lesson. God’s love is greater than all our sin and being forgiven makes us free, free to forgive, restore and bring peace. Peace with God and with our brothers and sisters in Christ. In this we are blest.
